Martin Gutmann is a Professor at the Lucerne Business School (HSLU Wirtschaft), where he teaches international relations, communication, and negotiation. From 2016 to 2020 he was the Managing Director of the Swiss School of Public Governance at ETH Zurich and a senior lecturer in the Chair of Negotiation and Conflict Management at D-MTEC.


Martin holds a PhD from the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs at Syracuse University (USA), an Executive MBA from ie Business School (Spain) and a Higher Education Teaching Certificate from Harvard University (USA). He grew up on three continents and is a Swiss and US citizen. He has taught at universities in the USA, Canada, Germany, Switzerland and Mauritius.

Martin’s research probes the contributions of a historical perspective to solving contemporary challenges, including topics such as leadership, sustainability and public policy. His most recent book is Before the UN Sustainable Development Goals: A Historical Companion (Oxford University Press, 2022). He also publishes regularly in academic and popular outlets, such as NZZ and SRF News. In addition to his academic work, Martin is a partner at Align Coaching and Consulting, a boutique coaching-service firm.
