Dr Andrea Ferrario
Course: Cases in Machine Learning
Dr Andrea Ferrario works as a Senior Research Associate at the Institute of Biomedical Ethics and History of Medicine at the University of Zurich and is principal lecturer on the CAS ETH in Machine Learning in Finance and Insurance at ETH Zurich.
His research lies at the intersection between philosophy and technology, focusing on epistemological and ethical problems of artificial intelligence (AI) in healthcare applications such as the algorithmic prediction of incapacitated patients’ care preferences, the relationship between explainability and trust in AI, and the use of machine learning in affective computing and cognitive science. His works have been published in leading philosophy and digital health journals such as Synthese, Minds & Machines, Philosophy & Technology, Journal of Medical Ethics and Computers in Human Behavior. His research has been featured in national and international publications such as the Tages-Anzeiger, Frankfurter Allgemeine, Financial Times, Forbes and Wall Street Journal.
Dr Ferrario holds a doctoral degree in mathematics from ETH Zurich. He spent five years in industry working as a consultant in data and analytics for financial services. He was also scientific director of the Mobiliar Lab for Analytics at ETH Zurich (D-MTEC) from 2018 to 2023.
