Future Money: From Design to Economics
New and emerging technologies are changing the way we pay – both on- and offline. Will we still use cash in fifty years? In a public session (webinar) hosted by the ETH Risk Center, international experts will discuss the current architecture of the monetary system, and how it might look in the future.
Due to a shift in preferences and the development of new technologies, long-standing forms of money are losing their appeal for the public. People use cash less and less, while the use of digital currencies is moving from the fringes of society and becoming common practice. These developments pose fundamental challenges to the current monetary architecture, and will require extensive adaptation.
The public session will feature keynote speeches by external page Darrell Duffie (Stanford University) and external page Randall Wright (University of Wisconsin-Madison), a panel discussion with external page Stefan Ingves (Governor, Sveriges Riksbank), external page Hélène Rey (London Business School) and external page Axel Weber (Chairman, UBS Group AG), and the presentation of a policy proposal for Switzerland by its authors, Hans Gersbach (D-MTEC, ETH Zurich) and Roger Wattenhofer (D-ITET, ETH Zurich).
The webinar “Future Money: Which Road” will take place on Thursday, 3 September 2020 from 4.00–7.30 p.m. CET. Participation is free of charge. You can find further information and register here.
