Professor Olga Fink
Course: Machine Learning for Industrial Applications
Olga Fink has been Assistant Professor of Intelligent Maintenance and Operations Systems at EPFL since March 2022. She is also a research affiliate at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and an expert at Innosuisse in the field of ICT. Olga’s research focuses on hybrid algorithms fusing physics-based models and deep learning algorithms; hybrid operational digital twins; transfer learning; self-supervised learning; deep reinforcement learning; and multi-agent systems for intelligent maintenance and operations of infrastructure and complex assets.
Before joining the EPFL faculty, Olga was awarded a prestigious professorship grant by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) and served as Assistant Professor of Intelligent Maintenance Systems at ETH Zurich from 2018 to 2022. From 2014 to 2018, she headed the Smart Maintenance Research Group at the Zurich University of Applied Sciences (ZHAW).
Olga serves as an editorial board member for several international journals, including Mechanical Engineering and Signal Processing, Reliability Engineering and System Safety and IEEE Sensors.
Olga received her doctorate from ETH Zurich for her thesis, “Failure and Degradation Prediction by Artificial Neural Networks: Applications to Railway Systems”. She also earned a Diploma degree in industrial engineering from the Hamburg University of Technology. She gained valuable industrial experience as a reliability engineer at Stadler Bussnang AG and as a reliability and maintenance expert at Pöyry Switzerland Ltd. In 2018, Olga was selected by Women in Business as one of the Top 100 Women in Business, Switzerland, and in 2019 she was recognized as a Young Scientist of the World Economic Forum.
